August 2026 – City of Barbourmeade “BackToSchool”

Area schools are back in session soon, including JCPS on Thursday, August 6th, 2026. To ensure the safety of our children and residents, the City of Barbourmeade has contracted with Derby City Protection to patrol our City during arrival (7:30am) and dismissal (2:10pm) times of Norton Elementary as well as when students are standing at bus stops or exiting school buses throughout our City. The officers will be citing anyone choosing to ignore our City speed limit (25 mph) and anyone choosing to ignore our City parking and traffic ordinances.

  • Vehicles are not allowed to stop and drop off students at the walker and roller entry.exit to Norton Elementary (along Sorrento Ave & Pompano Ave). If you need to drive a Norton Elementary student to.from school, your vehicle belongs in Norton Elementary’s carpool line on school property (JCPS requirement). The streets of Barbourmeade are not for drop off and pick up of Norton Elementary students in and out of vehicles.
  • When possible, Derby City Protection officers will offer assistance at the crosswalks located:
    • At Brownsboro Road and Brownsboro Vista Drive
    • At Barbour Lane at the Norton Elementary entry/exit

Remember:

  • Walkers and rollers (on bikes, scooters) need to share the road and follow road etiquette.
  • Walkers should face oncoming traffic (walk on the left side of the road).
  • Rollers should roll with traffic (right side of the road).
  • Walkers and rollers of any age and at any time should wear bright, reflective colors and safety vests. Flashing, reflective lights should be installed on backpacks and bicycles.

Thank you for your efforts to keep everyone safe at all times and especially on school days.
